REPUBLIC OF KIRIBATI PAVILION
For the Kiribati Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai, Simmetrico turned the realities of a geographically dispersed island nation into an accessible national narrative. Located in the Mobility District, the pavilion introduced Kiribati as 33 Pacific atolls connected by ocean, shared identity and generations of human movement. Content development traced the settlement of the islands from Southeast Asia through Micronesia, then focused on the communal values that continue to shape I-Kiribati society. The Maneaba meeting house, te kainga clan structure, Bubuti system of sharing, woven mats and garments made from pandanus and coconut leaves demonstrated how architecture, craftsmanship and social customs respond directly to the environment. Simmetrico’s visual language and targeted visitor-experience enhancements unified these cultural references within a clear contemporary presentation. The result positioned Kiribati as a welcoming, resourceful nation preserving its collective heritage while “leaping forward” to create opportunities for future prosperity.
